How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Photographer for YOU!
Planning a wedding is chock-full of big decisions — florists, DJs, guest lists, playlists, outfits, photographers, videographers, and everything in between. Think of it like a fun DIY project, where each piece brings you closer to your perfect day.
I can’t speak on the other categories, but choosing the perfect photographer is something I can certainly help with. Whoever you choose will be giving you tangible memories that you can hold onto and look back on forever. It’s important to pick someone you vibe with and trust fully to capture your day!
It’s important to note that one person’s “perfect photographer” will not be the same as the next person’s. We all have different standards and desires, so finding someone you trust is crucial.
So, let’s get into it!
STEP 1: Know what you’re looking for
Your search will go much more smoothly if you know exactly what you want from your photographer. Are you looking for a filmy, documentary-style gallery? Or do you prefer more natural, true-to-color photos? Do you love mostly posed shots, or would you like someone to act as a fly-on-the-wall that captures moments without you even realizing?
Each photographer has their own unique style, and being clear on your desires will help you weed out those you know you don’t want.
STEP 2: Find a few whose style you love
Once you know exactly what you want, you can go ahead and find a few different photographers whose work you absolutely adore.
Maybe you’ve been following them for a while, or maybe you’re starting from scratch. Either way, collecting 5-10 photogs whose styles you love is a good place to start!
Instagram, Google, and Facebook are great search engines for this. I’d type in “x wedding photographer,” with x being the location of your wedding. For example, “Boulder, CO wedding photographer”! ;)
Pinterest is also a cool platform for this — sort of like a reverse search, you can look for the photo styles you love & find the photographers who took/posted them. So much fun!
STEP 3: Inquire with them & book a chat
After you’ve found a few photographers whose work you love, book a little chat with them! This absolutely isn’t necessary, but getting to talk to your photog prospects can be super helpful in your decision process. It allows you to sus them out as a person — are they silly? professional? open-minded? strictly business? Whether the chat is over the phone, Zoom, or in person, it’s a great way to see if you have a good connection — just like a first date! Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll get lots of clarity on what it’ll be like working together.
STEP 4: Communicate your desires for the day
While chatting with your prospective photographers, it’s important to communicate exactly what you’re looking for on your big day. This will help clarify who is the best fit for you!
Do you want to follow a strict timeline, or are you prioritizing a more relaxed atmosphere? Are family photos the most important part, or would you rather focus on an intimate first look with your boo? Do you want extra photos of Grandpa who you haven’t seen in years? Are you opting out of posed fam photos altogether and solely want candids?
Clearly communicating your priorities for the celebration will ensure that you and your vendors are on the same page, which’ll really help your dreams come true!
STEP 5: Pick your person!
Last but not least, it’s time to choose your photog! After looking over each person’s price guides & photo styles, you should have all the info you need to make the perfect decision. Go with your gut — it always knows best! :)
